Turn Off Water For Winter

As we are truly in the cold months, turn off your outdoor faucets if you haven't already.

  1. Remove the hose: Take the hose and/or splitter off the faucet.

  2. Find the shut-off valve: The water shut-off valve is usually in the basement.

  3. Close the valve: Turn off the valve.

  4. Open the faucet: Open the faucet or hose bib outside to drain any remaining water.

Here are some other tips for protecting outdoor faucets from freezing:

  • Install an outdoor faucet protector.

  • Insulate the pipe leading up to the faucet.

  • Use a faucet cover to insulate the faucet.

Frozen faucets can create a lot of pressure that can damage pipes and spigot components. The pipes behind the outdoor spigot are part of the network that supplies the rest of the house.
