crime prevention

Something that officers have discovered while investigating residential burglaries in L.V. is that the perpetrators canvass the neighborhood by knocking on the door. This is done to see if any one is home. If someone is home and the door is answered they use a simple ruse, which is they ask for someone by name. What happens is the resident of the home thinks that it is a simple mistake and does not think that it is suspicious and does not call the police. Consequently the unknown individual is not checked on by the police and not identified. The unknown individual continues this ruse until an unoccupied home is discovered. Then he usually goes to the back of the home or the side whichever provides the most cover so that he can then use some implement that is at the home such as a brick, or a rock from a flower bed and break a window to gain access. Then usually takes things that are easy to carry such as jewelry or silverware.

Usual attire of this type of perpetrator is a "hoodie" which is a garment or sweatshirt that has a hood attached to it. So that it can cover the head, they also may have a back pack.

If a stranger comes to your door and asks for someone that does not live there, please notify the police. Dial 248-354-1010 and tell the dispatcher that a suspicious person came to your door. Provide a description of the individual and request that the officer stop by to speak to you.
